The Sum of Home I opens up the viewing public’s imagination of what home is with the image of a large window with left- and right-sliding panes. For the artist, Chen Wei-Wen, who believes that the family is at the core of self-development, the window is something that looks outward to neighbors and outsiders, and inwards to a cohesive home. It brings out interpersonal distances, whether close or distant. The red arowana fish on the right side of the composition seem to be the incarnation of the artist, who travels as if by magic through time and space. The plant by the window, like a clump of grass in a dry corner, shows a tenacious vitality. Chen Wei-Wen’s coloring technique combines ink and Eastern gouache, and she uses tiny, delicate brush strokes in a way that convey a hazy visual effect. In the background, she uses a semi-automatic technique allowing the media to flow naturally without complete control. This results in the creation of differently sized round spots on the wall surface and window, which help to create an impression of vagueness, as in a remembered scene.
