Driving at Night is an experiment in which the artist Hsieh Yu-Cheng reflected on the “screen generation,” as well as the act of staring at the screen. He used digital giclée printing on textureless tissue paper to capture photos taken while driving at high speeds. He also used dots of acrylic paint for the raindrops, which also simulate the effect of the scenery being partially magnified by water droplets, and at the same time bring out the visual space of the entire work. In our daily lives, the images we see on electronic screens are actually composed of countless grid images, and the tiny blocks of color you see here are exactly the kind of grid images you will see if you zoom in on the image on a screen. It’s as if you are riding in a car, looking through a rain-speckled windshield, or staring at a pixelated image on a computer screen.
