Classical Tale No. 29 is one of a series of “Classical Tale” works by the artist Cheng Nung-Hsuan. These works are based on images in classical paintings based on mythological narratives, but fast, intuitive brushstrokes are used to cover, displace, and distort them, so as to dismantle and transform the way one views such paintings. One then sees the mythology from a modern perspective. This painting is full of his dynamic brushstrokes, and there are three circles. At the center, painted in pinks and reds, is a stylized figure grabbing a branch, apparently trying to climb a tree. Cheng Nung-Hsuan believes that the yearning for the heavens or high places is a manifestation of human desire and is often an important theme in mythological stories. He drew the three circles, intuitive brushstrokes, and symbols following his feelings and rhythms of the moment of creation, focusing on the balance and color contrasts of the painting without setting any meaning to the symbols, leaving this to the viewers’ imaginations.
