Cheng Nung-Hsuan’s “Classical Tales” series applies elements of Western medieval and Renaissance painting—shapes, composition, colors, etc.—and extends them by fusing them with contemporary concepts. He combines smeared brushstrokes and twisted lines through special techniques and paints them on the outermost layer of the work in order to obstruct viewers’ vision. With such techniques, he broadens the room for them to apply their own visual imagination and interpretive possibilities. Classical Tale No. 32 alludes to the structure of classical still life paintings. On the table in the center of the picture, there is a realistically rendered bamboo dustpan, filled with remnants of food, the details of which are indistinguishable. The messy pile on the table is a metaphor for the residues of desire. In the background, Cheng Nung-Hsuan uses twisting brushstrokes, so that the things there look not only like plants, but also like fragments of forest scenes cut from landscape paintings.
