In Artist Liu Te-An’s Here and There, virtual and real spaces are arranged through a combination of extended lines and large blocks of black, gray, and white in an exploration of the concept of spatial coordinates. Liu blended the media of acrylic, pastel, and charcoal into a matte texture, which naturally brings out the glossiness of the pencil, thereby creating a spatial hierarchy. The black, gray, and white blocks in the background of the painting, on the one hand, create a sense of calmness and elegance in the tone of the work; on the other hand, their strong tonal contrast give the composition a feeling of three-dimensionality. The directions of the color blocks and the lines both balance and conflict each other, so that the painting seems to have no center. This also lets viewers mentally plot out different three-dimensional spaces by themselves, no matter which way they view it, so the composition provides abundant viewing pleasure.
