Liu Te-An’s Whispering 3: Dark Night and Deep Memory is divided into two halves, one light and one dark, forming a strong contrast. On the dark left side, pencil and charcoal lines create a sense of “space,” while on the bright right side, acrylic paint is layered on, to the point that the built-up pigments and brush traces present a blur, suggestive of fleeting “time.” Having mastered the characteristics of his media, the artist can ensure that the “space” and “time” on the two sides of the painting are in harmony, that reason and sensibility mirror each other, and at the same time communicate and connect with the viewer. The painting also conveys his feelings about night: when night descends, people return indoors, and the busy activities of the day suddenly come to rest. We also quiet down and become like bystanders to the scene, staring at this urban space as if it were a fantasy stage. It goes from clear to hazy, and finally becomes no more than a vague impression in our minds.
