Pillow Mountain 05 - Family Trip was inspired by a trip that the artist Chen Yen-Bo and his family once took from Kaohsiung to Taitung. He first mixed the acrylic paints into the more subdued tones that one finds in ink paintings, and then used traditional brush techniques and the “three-distance” perspective to paint the twisted, towering line of mountains in the painting. The pinkish-white cloud-like or smoke-like forms that emerge from the mountains are based on cloud images found in ink paintings, but these are now reinterpreted into utterly distinctive cloud forms. The road that twists through the mountains looks like a roller coaster. The traffic signals, cones, and balloons that dot the mountains give the work a joyful, childlike atmosphere. The large pillows stuck between the mountains are the artist’s personal symbol for himself, but he also wanted to use them for contrast with the magnificence of the mountains. The small pink fish that appear in the middle ground, lower right, and upper left, and the bubbles popping up from the tops of the mountain echo the basic idea behind this work: “If the world was full of water …”
