The artist Kao Ya-Ting used carbon paper as a medium to create an earlier series of monochromes, but this work, Scenes, differs from those, because here she used it with colored pencils and watercolors to create a colorful work. Carbon paper serves not only to copy things, but can also be used to combine and splice things together and create unique scenery effects. The plume of white mist rising in the upper right comes from a post-volcanic fumarole; this was inspired by scenery on Yangmingshan. She also selected scenic elements from classic Chinese paintings such as Fan Kuan’s Travelers through Mountains and Streams and Shen Zhou’s Lofty Mount Lu, which she cleverly rearranged and integrated into a colorful, magical, and novel landscape. It is through repeated experimentation such as this that the artist contemplates how she can create the desired cultural context with a contemporary visual experience. It is a process of exploring the various possibilities of painting and maintaining creative flexibility.
