In Cheng-kung Hill – I, the artist Li Shih-Wen uses charcoal and acrylic to depict the scenery on Cheng-kung Hill, when soldiers train there. Many trees are planted on Cheng-kung Hill, but here the artist focused on one, presented in a single tone but with rich changes of tonality, fully showing the distinct qualities of the charcoal medium: non-reflective, much tonal variation, and the potential of layering and blending. By observing the scenes he passes by every day, Li thinks of how all things, through time and the five senses, have a place in human knowledge. But if the definition of civilization is removed, then what do all of these things outside of ourselves become, and how do we understand them? Things are covered in time’s constant flow, and never entirely escape what they originally had been. Whether a dense forest or a fast-pulsing city, they all retain something indescribably primitive, and if we delve deep, these untamed things will pour out. Everything, in the face of time, is wild.
