In her “Untitled” series, Artist Wu Hsin-Yu attempts to construct an intangible, elusive, and undefinable space connecting external vision and inner feelings. In Untitled 2020, she wanted mainly to depict her feelings about light and the power of light. She used the symmetry and balance of the square at the center to construct something like a portal connecting the external and internal worlds. She then used pencils and pastels to stack gradients of color that create an extended sense of space. She also erased signs of individual brushstrokes, allowing the particles of pastel and pencil to be carefully kneaded into the paper fibers. The orderly overlapping process created a space where beginnings and endings are unclear. It also allowed the work as a whole to be viewed from two perspectives: the square may be either “spreading from the center to the periphery” or “shrinking from the periphery to the center.”
