In her “Untitled” series, Artist Wu Hsin-Yu attempts to construct an intangible, elusive, and undefinable space connecting external vision and inner feelings. She uses the symmetry and balance of a square to create a portal that seems to connect the external and internal worlds. In her Untitled 2018, the squarish shape, with its hard white boundary, seems to have a determined presence, and the strong black-and-white contrast is a reflection of Wu Hsin-Yu’s feelings about life’s power. She used layer on layer of blue and black to draw what people imagine to be dark places. In the process of adding layer upon layer of color, she also felt that each layer of color is like a heartbeat, a moment in life weaving happiness and sadness together. The more life is blocked, the more its power comes through.
