Entwined

Entwined is inspired by old houses that are full of the traces of time. In this painting, the tree rooted in the lower left corner spreads its leafy branches, adding a bit of vitality to the age-mottled background, and it also serves as a metaphor for vitality needing support. Chen Tzu-Jo brings “mounting” into her creation, so that the squares of silver foil in the background also become an important element of the image. To create the mottling, she oxidized the silver foil to an appropriate degree, so that the overall composition has a decayed, yellowed visual effect. She used gouache to add color to the plants. Changes in the intensity of ink bring out the imagery when the work is seen from a distance, but the subtle changes in color and brushwork texture can also be appreciated when the work is closely examined. The painting thus works well both from a distance and close-up.
