Tsai Wen Ting is adept at exploring and experimenting with the various possibilities of ink painting with composite media. In Quiet Stone Image, he replaced the traditional rice paper used in ink painting with Arches watercolor paper, used charcoal pencils to process the stones’ texture, and created the gradations in heavy and light shade by smearing. The composition, with its low-saturation palette that verges on black-and-white, presents a simple, pure atmosphere. And the Arches Watercolor Paper, which acquires a slightly yellowed tinge over time, gives the stones more of an earth-toned hue. The composition is also divided into a grid of squares, like that found in some camera viewing windows; this also represents a new step in the artist’s creative evolution. The large amount of blank space at the bottom of the picture and the darkening shadows at the top make the viewer curious about the panorama outside the picture while conveying a sense of stability and tranquility.
