Artist Tsai Wen Ting specializes in ink wash creations, and is good at exploring and experimenting with various possibilities of ink wash with composite media. The work Concentrated Landscape Series 1 has abstract elements and imaginary landscapes, and it is also an exploration of the inner self. He does not use rice paper, however, aiming to find ways of making ink wash more expressive. Tsai first draws the complete picture, and then assembles them like tiles to create a visual effect like that of a window grille or faceted image. The complete work, when viewed up close, looks like a set of ordinary tiles, but from a distance, it looks like an innovative, contemporary landscape. The “concentrated” in the title represents the gaze, the suspension of time, and the artist’s state of concentration during the act of creation.
