作品賞析
The artist Peng Si-Qi created the sculpture Preserve based on the contrasting metaphors “light as a feather and heavy as Mount Tai.” Throughout the work we can see an expression of thinking in two-dimensions, the kind of thinking that appears in paintings. Peng personally made the base out of terrazzo and inlaid copper strips to outline the Buddha’s hand. The copper strips make soft, gentle arcs. A withered leaf supported by the Buddha’s hand is made of paper pulp mixed with glaze, which was then fired in the kiln as a ceramic. A gentle atmosphere pervades the work. In terms of media, there is a strong contrast between the lightness of the ceramic leaves and the heaviness of the terrazzo base. As for technique, the copper strips serve to outline the hand, as if they were lines of ink drawn by the brush, while pebble washes were used in traditional architecture. The combination of two- and three-dimensional techniques mark a kind of turning point in the artist’s creative development.
