Huang Li-ying’s representative creative technique is to treat the relationship between light and shadow through graphite drawing. He depicts “strange stones” in monochromatic or low-saturation methods on a black baseboard. It is easier for people to project their emotions or imaginations on irregularly shaped stones. The graphite strokes will have a silvery reflection that gets brighter as the graphite becomes deeper and heavier—it is the reverse of what happened in his past experience with painting. Furthermore, the reflection will change depending on lighting and will continue to shift depending on viewing angle, so it brings out the relationship between the artwork, the viewer, and the space they are in. The spatial installation Line of Stone is comprised of a graphite drawing and two black cast iron sculptural pieces. The sculptural pieces are extensions of the drawing, and the arrangement can be changed depending on its exhibition environment. Meanwhile, viewers can walk around them to discover more viewing angles.
