Huang Li-Ying pays attention to issues in painting, especially the research and experimentation on light as a medium. He explores the possibilities of using it in his modern paintings. His work Truthy Stone centers on the concept of sensibility and conveys the idea that there is no certain conection between sensibility, i.e., one’s feeling of reality, and objective reality. As long as you believe something is a fact, it will become a fact. He chose to use graphite lines on panels painted with a black matte-finish paint to paint unusually shaped stones. On traditional pencil drawings, light can only be expressed in reverse through shadows, but Huang Li-Ying uses graphite on a black substrate to produce a reflective effect, thereby directly depicting light and presenting light’s trajectory. The line-drawn patterns in the stones are very rich. When viewers stand at different angles before the work, they can see changes of light and dark in the images, see and feel realistic changes, and gain more space for viewing and interpretation.
