ＭAMA LU-Alchemy

The artist Lu Wei’s MAMA LU—Alchemy is based on her experience of pregnancy. She used a brush to write about and depict the process of nurturing a life, and printed it into the form of a traditional book. She believes that even though the fetus growing inside the mother’s body is invisible, it is linked with the mother’s body, which is also changing every day. It is almost like alchemy, in which the various processes and changes are always occurring simultaneously. Thus, in her book, she records the invisible physical changes and feelings that she felt during each stage of her pregnancy. However, at the same time, she uses the form of a traditional book, in order to point out how mothers’ bodies or motherhood were never discussed or depicted in the history of Chinese art. In addition, she drew a morning glory pattern which she printed on blue-dyed cloth to make the book cover—as if the cover were the clothes used to wrap the female body.
