Artist Hsu Tzu-Kuey’s work Running uses the kind of ox image used to celebrate the New Year of the Ox, but is composed of three oxen standing on top of each other. Their bright colors, vivid expressions, and powerful postures represent a joyful and energetic artistic conception. Hsu often uses animals in his art with added anthropomorphized expressions to enhance the visual effects. His works also feature his distinctive “three-dimensional painting.” First he converts discarded paper into pulp, molds the pulp into shape, and then paints it. The works have the three-dimensionality of sculpture and the color of two-dimensional painting. Besides their lively expressions and colors, the three oxen face different directions, so that the viewer can approach it from any angle and gain a rich visual experience.
