作品賞析
The artist Hsu Tzu-Kuey regards his work as a “three-dimensional painting,” unlike ordinary flat paintings or three-dimensional sculptures. He uses corrugated fiberboard as the skeleton and papier-mâché(Paper mache) for the flesh, then uses oil paints to paint bright, saturated colors and textures. In this way, he creates many unusual, fantastic, anthropomorphized animals. In Welcome Mascot: The Tiger-Deer, the “tiger-deer” is a fantasy creature with the body of a tiger, but with antlers on its head. It stands at a forward tilt, with its forepaws on its abdomen and a childlike smile on its face, as if it is welcoming the people who come to view it. Hsu Tzu-Kuey is good at using animals to express human emotions and life situations. Here he takes the Lunar New Year wish for “blessings, salary, and longevity” (fu lu shou) and embodies it as an imaginary “tiger-deer(hu lu shou),” which Hsu believes symbolizes inner happiness. When you stand before it, does it make you feel happy too?
