This work is one of Chou Fang-Yu’s “Food Landscape” series. For seven years starting in 2013, the artist visited many towns and villages in Taiwan through the “Round the Island Artist in Residency Program” and integrated the culture and the landscape into her works. The “Food Landscape” series combines elements from the environment and from cuisine, so that one can see a bowl of ice with a sulphur hot spring, a fruit pie that flows like a mudslide, and so on. This work, Red Earth Seafood Noodles, is based on a Kinmen specialty, oyster noodles, but we see small oxen and black goats wandering among the noodles, and there are small piles of red earth here and there. Plants suitable for lateritic cultivation—that is, growing in red, iron-ore rich soil—are very limited, but sorghum is one of them. Kinmen’s sheep and cattle eat sorghum residue from the kaoliang distillers—the island’s ecology and economic development are closely related. In such a limited land area, how to take into account environmental protection and sustainability while economic development is a topic that the artist hopes to guide the audience to think about.
