作品賞析
Chou Fang-yu has worked as an artist in residence at various places around Taiwan since 2013, transforming what she sees and hears into magical, theatre-like scenes. This work comes from her “Homeland” series, and it shows a temporary beach shed on the shore by Toucheng, Yilan County, where there are fishermen always going out to sea to catch eel fry. To resist the cold wind and store their tools, they build these structures with waterproof plastic sheets. In the painting, the artist has added sand castle, beach ball, and other objects into the foreground, and tropical plants in the background to present a beautiful atmosphere. A “sea view” sounds like something from a real estate ad, but it actually represents everyone’s yearning for better living conditions. Chou Fang-Yu pays close attention to environmental issues, such as the impact of these temporary structures on the coastal landscape, and this painting is a part of her attempt to guide viewers’ reflections on such issues.
