Cheng Chien-Chang’s creations revolve around people, land, and nature and often contrast huge and tiny images to symbolize the boundless universe and the tiny things in it. In his Blue Sky, Tree of Life, the immense tree stretching between the earth and sky symbolizes endless vitality. Branches extend from its trunk, and after its thick leaves fall, they become the spring mud and nourish the soil. We can see tiny people on these leaves, symbolizing the myriad things on earth, which likewise cycle through death and rebirth. The two small trees growing on either side and to the back of the tree of life symbolize the endless generation of new life. When Cheng Chien-Chang paints, he will first draw the outline in black, make simple changes of light and shadow, and then fill in contrasting colors. The black ink-like color gives the work an oriental charm. Cheng Chien-Chang continues to explore through his art the subject of “how us small human beings find a way to live in the universe.”
