CHENG Chien-Chang supports the spirit of gaining first-hand experience from everyday life regarding issues related to the soil and the environment, using a unique artistic style to convey his love and concern for the land, culture, and natural landscapes of Taiwan. Digging is a narration of pioneers, their arrival to this land, and their spiritual trials experienced during their journey across the ocean and the land. The composition shows a man ploughing the land with his foot firmly planted on the earth while surrounded by a body of white, flowing water. CHENG Chien-Chang uses a rustic and powerful style to create works that contemplate personal identity from a political and historical perspective, convey the hardworking, honest, and straight forward characteristics of the Taiwanese people, and share his deep emotional ties with the land and its denizens.
