Chang Shin-Pi’s works often express the distinctive features of Taiwanese local customs, to express his concern for “this land and this people.” Bagging Prosperity, which focuses on southern Taiwan’s pineapple farms, uses warm orange, golden yellow, peach, and purple and swift brushstrokes to capture the feeling of the steaming, scorchingly hot weather the farmers work in. Only two farmers can be seen in the vast pineapple field, so a sense of loneliness spontaneously emerges. The deserted coconut grove at the right rear of the pineapple field testifies to the loss of agricultural manpower and the rise and fall of industry. The farmer in the foreground has just set four harvested pineapples on the ground and is preparing to bag them. However, the impact of climate change, such as severe heat, has been threatening Taiwan’s agriculture in recent years. The artist not only seeks to depict not only Taiwan’s unique scenery, environment, and ways of life, but also show how these are changing.
