Artist Chang Shin-Pi’s Shoreline uses transparent brushstrokes and bright, strong colors to draw a layered scene that shows the changes of Taiwan’s natural shoreline under the onslaught of human forces. In this painting, the beach is occupied by heavy construction equipment that blocks the view of sky and sea. The construction equipment reflects the rays of the intense sun. These digger and crane seem like a pair of actors showing off their speed and strength, as they alter the entire landscape. The white of the gravel truck also draws the viewer’s focus toward the center of the painting. This work presents Chang Shin-Pi’s close observation of what occurs around him. His brush captures the reality of what is happening to nature under development, and it reflects his concern for Taiwan.
