The artist Chuang Shu-Fen’s “Birdman 1” series presents a total of nine photographs relating to birds and people in a nine-square arrangement. Chuang uses slow shutter speeds and post-production techniques to produce afterimages and multiple exposure effects on the recurrent figure in the photos, which looks like a winged birdman. The birdman flaps his wings, preparing to fly up to join the birds high in the sky. The sense of motion produced by the afterimages in the pictures gives the viewer a sense of his eagerness to try joining the birds, dispite the dark tones of the pictures. Through this work, the artist makes a connection with the movie Birdman. The telephone and light switches in one of the photos suggest that people should listen to their true inner voice, learn to love themselves more, and be brave when pursuing their dreams. The work has a positive meaning, suggesting that human beings become great because of their dreams.
