“The scenery on our planet Earth actually has many similarities with the known planets!” The artist Chou Yu-Hsu would like to use photography to prove it. Landing on Pluto was photographed in the mouth of a volcano in northern Iceland, and the photograph did not go through any post-production processing. Even so, it makes us feel like we have landed on another planet. We may suppose that a spacecraft has reached Pluto, and the explorer vehicle is leaving tracks on the planet’s surface. The tracks extend into the distance before us, as if inviting us further into the icy plain. When Chou was a child, he liked star-gazing and was fond of science fiction movies, so images of other planets were often floating through his mind. Through photography, these mental images are converted into visible signs that touch off a sense of familiarity among viewers, who then search through their memories for various elements that can be formed into an accompanying story. Landing on Pluto is just one small part of Chou’s universe. He says, “Like in Marvel Studio’s movies, our universe will just go on creating!” Which planet will be the next stop?
