Sound Portrait Taiwan Series—MaIn9 is a video installation work by the new media artist Kuo Pei-Chi. This series combines the portrait images of political figures and musical scores by arranging musical notes on score paper in a way that produces the portraits. As the time axis moves through the score to play the notes, one hears a melody that becomes utter cacophony as soon as the time axis reaches the subject’s face. This serves to express the idea that a seemingly reasonable, regular political system can still produce all kinds of irrationality and discord. In this particular work, Kuo combines sheet music of the children’s song “Xiucai, Get It on Horseback,” with the face of former president Ma Ying-jeou; the song serves as a metaphor for Ma’s political career. At this time, the notes and sheet music are transformed into a medium for history and collective memory.
