For Tu Sheng-Chun, ink is his main creative medium. From his childhood, he grew up on Keelung’s Heping Island, so most of his works relate to images of the ocean and islands. Through constant observation, thought, and imagination, he re-explores the forms and symbolic meanings of islands. Tu’s Another Landscape derives from his experience visiting the sea caves on Orchid Island. The image, which he had photographed against bright light during his visit, has a strong contrast between the dark of the cave and brightness outside. It also deepens the illusion of being in another dimension and makes the islands seem to float on the sea, so that the scene outside seems to look like an unknown world that travels across time and space. Driftwood has always been an important element in Tu Sheng-Chun’s artwork. He believes that the various marks on the wood are like miniature traces of the course of life. With the passage of time, they carry many stories and memories, but their actual existence is quite fleeting.
