Cloud is part of a two-year project by artist Chang Chih-Chung. He started with a model ship made by his father, who worked for the Kaohsiung Port Authority, and then did field and documentary research. His works relate the stories of Typhoon Thelma in 1977, and the protests that erupted in 2002 when a proposed development around Hongmao Port in Kaohsiung touched off a dispute around village relocation; the protesters threatened to bomb a ship to block the harbor entrance. Chang Chih-Chung uses acrylic panel, antifouling paint, graphite, and other media to depict the roiling clouds that one sees as a typhoon approaches. It seems as if the seawater is being whipped into the sky. At the top, he nailed wooden boards and hemp ropes, which are common on ships. Through the majesty and cruelty of the picture, the process of struggle, hostility, sacrifice, and uniting hand-in-hand is also shown. The beautiful vistas of the future are like mirages on the sea, glittering but unattainable.
