The artist Chang Ting-Ya excels at creating water-based woodcut prints. Characteristic features of these woodcut prints are that the natural grain of the wood is left on the screen, and the distinctive tonalities of the water-based ink and pigments. Stylistically, Chang’s works are similar to Chinese ink painting, but they retain the characteristics of woodcuts and strongly reflect an Oriental charm. This work is one of Chang Ting-Ya’s “Between Inside and Outside” series of prints, which center on Oriental-style folding screens. Since folding screens are used to divide spaces, they naturally can be used to divide the regions of “inside” and “outside.” Chang adds potted plants, stairs, windows, and other things with indoor or outdoor characteristics in order to produce a fresh sense of spatial flow. The branch bursting through the round window connects the inside and outside and suggests the cycles and operations of life.
