The artist, Ting-Tong Chang, has lived in London, England for many years. His diverse creative media include everything from painting, video, and performance to mechanical installations. In his works, he combines knowledge from many different fields—biology, biodynamics, and other sciences—as he explores the relationship between science, society, and the individual. Jungle Exploration is a charcoal sketch that carefully depicts the scene of a Ryanair jet passing through a tropical jungle. The back half of the fuselage emits thick black smoke, showing that the plane is in a dangerous state. Ryanair is a well-known low-cost airline in Europe. Chang used to fly frequently because of his work in Europe, but this low-cost airline with its frequent accidents always scared him. Chang has thus transformed the details and feelings of daily life experience into a very dramatic drawing. A tropical jungle is a place that for most people represents ubiquitous danger and the complete unknown, and for the artist, it reflects his experiences and moods while working and struggling abroad.
