The artist Liu Chia-Wei is good at using oil and the techniques of realism to depict scenery. In recent years, he has brought the theme of environmental protection into his works, adding man-made objects to express his concern about the environment. This work, Peaks, uses plastic bags—ubiquitous in modern life—as the main object, and reshapes this artificial packaging material into layers of mountains. Although both plastic bags and mountains are common, familiar things, combining the two in this way will also reveal some uneasiness. This work is one of Liu Chia-Wei’s attempts to reinterpret natural landscape features with artificial packaging materials. The clearly visible contours and wrinkles on the plastic bags resemble the earth’s contours. Liu uses delicate oil painting techniques to present the images that resemble photographs. These surreal scenes—realistic, yet strange—bring out the contradictions between nature and civilization, and also lead viewers to ponder the importance of environmental protection.
