Bubbles are an often-recurring motif in Hsu Kuo-Yu’s artwork and have become a part of her highly recognizable painting style over the years. In her Landscape Series - Foamy Landscape 2, she deliberately added a lot of bubbles to the landscape, attempting to use her own distinctive motif to an extreme. In the center, you can see a dense thicket of trees, their trunks and branches intertwined with one another. This is supposed to be the focus of the composition, but it is penetrated, covered over, and surrounded by a large quantity of bubbles, so the thicket of trees naturally melts into them. Hsu Kuo-Yu depicts the trees in the painting with the line-drawing method, only outlining the trees, which gives the viewer the feeling that vacuity and solid reality are interwoven. From the distant background to the foreground, bubbles can be seen everywhere, and it is through their varying sizes, colors, and shapes that they create the sense of depth and space in the composition, structuring the foamy landscape scenery in the artist’s mind.
