Landscape Series - Trees and Flowers 1, one of Hsu Kuo-yu’s recent creations, depicts different psychological landscapes. Trees of varying sizes are arranged in the foreground and background of the composition, so that some can be seen in full, and others only partially. Cutting across some of the tree trunks are color blocks that resemble streams of water. Large or small bubbles appear here and there in their midst, enhancing the sense of space throughout the picture. However, where the woods and bubbles seem thoroughly interwoven, a rose in bloom is particularly noticeable. Hsu Kuo-Yu outlines the petals with the line-drawing method found in traditional ink painting and brings out the richly layered bloom with simple yet meticulous lines. This was the first time Hsu placed a flower in her work: she was inspired by the roses in bloom in her studio garden. Through this complex, many-layered composition and rich palette, we can walk with Hsu Kuo-Yu into her dreamy yet detailed inner landscape.
