The artist Tsao Wen-Jui uses the techniques of pop art and surrealism to produce human reflections on the evolution of science and technology. This work, The Path to Evolution, is set in Berlin, Germany. The building on the right is the Baroque-style Berlin Zeughaus (armory), and the building on the left is Deutsches Historisches Museum (DHM), which is very modern. Though entirely different in style, they correspond to each other. Two robots from the same company stand in the foreground, but one is a new model, the other an old one. These misplaced old and new things symbolize mankind’s determination to develop a scientific and technological civilization. The hot air balloon that Tsao Wen-Jui inserted in the sky behind was the first-ever flying machine capable of resisting gravity. Although it can fly, it cannot be precisely controlled. In this way, the artist wants to remind us that no matter how fast technology develops, we still cannot forget to respect the natural world.
