The artist, Chang Li-Yeh, has observed that the moon is often used in art by cultures both in the East and West, but he is also deeply attracted by the moon’s mysterious quality, so his Moon Light Fish is an expression of this. The moon is set right at the top center of the painting, and it radiates a dazzling light that limns the surrounding clouds and forest trees, covering them with a pale yellow aura. Directly below it, and connected to it by a strong beam, is a fish, which also shines with the same yellow light. The fish swims in a round lake positioned at the exact center of the painting and surrounded by unusual trees and blossoms in saturated colors. Chang Li-Yeh captures a scene in which “all things have spirits.” At the time of the full moon, the moonlight scatters over everything on earth, illuminating the interaction between heaven and earth and showing how all living things are linked together. Chang hopes that viewers can gain a keen sense of the truth behind Zhuangzi’s statement, “Heaven and earth contain great beauty, but do not speak.”
