Light HU’s artworks often wander between abstraction and concreteness. By creating unusual lines, she interprets the rhythmic forces among the myriad things in the universe. By extending, compressing, and shifting the lines, she expresses moods that may seem cool and quiescent but contain an inner restlessness. The most eyecatching feature of her Wandering Earth and Heaven is certainly its countless twisting and turning white lines, which cross the composition in a generally horizontal direction. At first glance they look like the elevation lines on a topographic map or a graphic representation of sound frequencies or waveforms in physics. The deep browns and greens below the lines set off the insecure mood of the white lines. Hu imagines herself climbing a high mountain and looking into the distance from the summit, and downward into the mountain valleys. The broad vista makes the viewer feel as if he or she is somewhere between heaven and earth and resonating in harmony with them. The painting expresses the artist’s own observations and feelings about nature and the cosmos.
