CHANG san's ink painting, March Towards Brightness, uses the ancient knotting rope notes as the formal concept. Combined with the thick lines of calligraphy the expression of Western abstract art, he tries create an abstract painting containing both Eatern and Western cultural elements. In 1931, ethnomusicologis Liu Tian-Hua created an Erhu solo entitled March Towards Brightness which boldly adopted the march style in Western music with bright and lively tempo. The playing also cleverly utilizes the bow bouncing and trembling technique seen in violins to expand the performing capability of Erhu, a folklife instrument. Although a lot of Western music learning is used, the traditional vlaue of folk music is also retained at the same time. This work is a tribute to the musician Liu Tian-Hua and the intellectuals who first accepted the Western trend in the early years of the Republic of China and continued to explore traditional elements for cultural outlets.
