SU Kuo-Ching spent many years focusing on creating landscape paintings that feature sights in Taiwan, using dramatic composition to depict Taiwan’s unique geographical and environmental features. Retrospect depicts a large, roiling cloud and magnificent trees. The vertical composition generates a spectacular and powerful visual. The sky is colored using purple which is an unnatural hue that nevertheless became SU Kuo-Ching’s personal preference when it comes to color. The character in the painting has his back towards the audience, and gazes towards the road that he has just tread, as though looking back at the life he had led thus far. SU Kuo-Ching’s landscape paintings, like German Romantic style artworks convey inner emotional worlds every person shares as well as personal loneliness.
