HSU Chia-Hung’s recent works focused on identity. “High Mountain, Long Journey-12” attempts to explore the issues of lands, identity, and cultural differences from the perspective of a Taiwanese born in China. Media such as window grilles taken from military dependents’ villages and two-dimensional paintings are combined in his works. The painting uses a bystander’s perspective to illustrate the landscapes of Taiwan’s remote islands. The striking red-colored political slogans that appear on the island became hard to read due to the deliberate replacement and defacing of several key words. HSU Chia-Hung uses his personal experience and surreal approach of creating an anachronistic setting to entwine the historical marks left on two different lands.
