HSU Chia-Hung’s recent works focused on identity. “High Mountain, Long Journey-10” attempts to explore the issues of lands, identity, and cultural differences from the perspective of a Taiwanese born in China. Media such as window grilles taken from military dependents’ villages and two-dimensional paintings are combined in his works that depict, via a bystander’s perspective, the landscapes of Taiwan’s remote islands. However, this island has been furnished with different cultural symbols that include the Statue of Liberty, the flag of the Republic of China, and military slogans. HSU Chia-Hung uses his personal experience and surreal approach of creating an anachronistic setting to entwine the historical marks left on two different lands.
