HSU Yi-Hsuan’s panel painting “Shepherd Donkey” is an attempt to investigate the balance between artificial constructs and nature. Graduated tones and overlapping color patches generate an abstract and enigmatic style. The painting depicts a domesticated shepherd donkey working on behalf of the shepherd, leading a pack of obedient sheep through the mountains. The sheep follow the donkey with a harmony that resembles that of close friends, while the donkey provides tender motherly care and gives a ride to a young lamb before disappearing into the mountains. HSU Yi-Hsuan uses intermixing color patches to create a spiritual atmosphere within natural settings.
