HONG Zi-We’s panel art “The Woman Opens the Door” is based on tomb frescoes, projecting, into the inner world of modern audiences, the fantasies of ancient people about the afterlife and the future. Every work was treated as a mirror to reflect upon a virtual world. The composition depicts a modern apartment building. Bamboo, fish, coins, dragon, phoenix, and other decorative symbols outside the apartment represent various forms of wealth and fortune. “The Woman opens the door” refers to a woman welcoming the master of the household before bedtime and the act of entering a private and personal space. The tomb fresco reflects the imaginations and faith that people in ancient times have for the afterlife so as to achieve spiritual solace. HONG Zi-We uses this series of artworks to contemplate the fleeting and changing nature of life and to unearth the hidden self.
