WU Siao-Jing often uses flowers as a representative theme of her ink paintings. “Contemplation (5)” presents nine forms of camellia flowers. Each of the nine flowers is presented in a unique state. Some camellia flowers have no colors and are only presented using burnt or torn foil. Some look majestic and elegant, while others are wilting or in a state of decay. Each flower has its own expression and story. Some are beauteous to behold, others are isolated and fragile, and there are even those torn apart by the ravages of time. WU Siao-Jing uses these flowers as a metaphor for human life and to convey the joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness that it contains.
