BAI Cian-Yu’s “Aureola” is part of a series of artworks about movement and dissolution that oscillate between figurative and abstract elements. The artist uses continuous and direct brushstrokes to establish the composition so that the character portrayed appears to be moving with the brushstrokes to assume abstract and fluid contours. The work can also be described as a process where a figurative form is gradually dissolved and transformed into another. Bai Cian-Yu’s work reflects upon the role played by human nature in social and cultural constructs and the presence of religion under different cultural states. Her work often portrays a single, blended character with two aesthetic languages, creating art where different elements contrast and co-exist and allowing structure to be an integral component of the deconstruction process.
