TUNG Chen-Ping’s Zebra II is based upon the 1988 Rotation Series. Rotations and hollows are common artistic vocabulary employed by him. The hollows go beyond the 2D limitations of material surfaces, providing spatial pathways through surfaces and planes to eliminate the sense of isolation and enclosure of solid objects. Rotation, on the other hand, serve as an analogy for various natural cycles such as birth, old age, sickness, and death as well as the seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The artwork, when viewed from above, seems to display planetary objects, with the zebra existing between the realms of physical and virtual worlds, allowing the sculpture to exist in both positive and negative forms. TUNG Chen-Ping uses the features of hollows and holes to introduce architectural spatial concepts into sculptures and accentuate the mental form of rotating hollows.
