TUNG Chen-Ping’s New Renaissance is an earlier panel artwork that reflects upon Taiwan’s excessive focus on academic achievement that came at the expense of art and cultural education. The artist portrayed a set of recharging equipment while recreating a sketch of a prophet from the Sistine Chapel illustrated by Michelangelo. After multiple rounds of photocopying, the work was then transferred to a piece of kraft paper that was then provided with postage stamps. Linen printing was then used to create the outward appearance of wear. A yellowed and worn appearance was used to highlight the sense of age and history and the fact that cultural development cannot be achieved overnight. In addition to searching for the metaphysical nature of objects, culture can only be developed with a strong sense of connection to the realities of social life.
