Nitjan Takivalit’s work Restore Injured Heart is based upon his emotions after the Typhoon Morakot disaster. The iron construction integrates curves and rigidly straight lines. A man is shown suspended in mid-air that seems safe but also serves as a prison from which he could not escape from. The man’s head is bowed as he surveys the devastated land covered by pins in an attempt to hide the destruction. Typhoon Morakot and the floods it caused have ravaged the land. The tribespeople were able to receive aids and relocate their village, but the lost spiritual and cultural roots could hardly be rebuilt. Nitjan Takivalit created this iron sculpture that incorporates traditional and modern features to tell this story and initiate dialogs with the land he lives on.
